2024 Medical Waste Generator Renewal Updates

The deadline for 2024 annual MWG-ID registration has been extended from December 31, 2023 to April 1, 2024.

A new, simplified process is now available for entities who wish to register multiple branches/sites within the boundaries of the Medical Waste Regulations. This optional process allows consolidating multiple sites into a single site and potentially reducing fees. See below for details.

If you are a medical waste generator and are registering one site or each branch/site for your company individually, please continue as usual. Go to www.ri.gov/DEM/medical_waste_generator and log in using the provided MWG-ID and Zip Code combination. hat you have registered for in the past for your site. Please do not create a new registration number if you have problems accessing the system. Send an email to Alyson.Brunelli@dem.ri.gov, and she is happy to assist you. Even though the new calendar year has started, please feel free to continue using your number while you proceed to renew your MWG – ID.

Medical waste generators must pay a fee each year based on the amount of medical waste they expect to generate for that calendar year. Fees are based on an estimate of what you expect to generate for 2024. You can contact your medical waste transporter to determine how much was picked up last year. An email was sent out to the contact email provided to RIDEM when you last registered. If you did not receive the email with your login information and need assistance renewing, please email Alyson.Brunelli@dem.ri.gov.

Deadline: The New Deadline for Registration is April 1, 2024.

Beginning this year, MWGs may register one number, pay one fee, and maintain one Medical Waste Generator ID to be used for all locations, provided that, moving forward, one manager will coordinate your medical waste.

According to Rule 1.16 of the Medical Waste Regulations[i]: For the purpose of these regulations, a person is considered to be a single generator, even if it utilizes more than one (1) site in the course of its operation.

This policy affects Medical Waste Generators who meet the following requirements:

    • The owner/private management company has multiple sites (2 or more) located in RI.
    • The owner/private management company will move to having one contact overseeing all sites.

    What has changed?

In the past, to share a number sites were required to be contiguous (adjacent/sharing a boundary), or property management companies were required to collect waste from non-contiguous sites and drive them from satellite locations to a centralized location. Now, a management company may opt to register one site for the total amount of medical waste generated in the state, with a maximum fee for registering one number for all locations of $206.
