Fixed-Site Monitoring Stations Network Data

Network Data:

One of the goals of the Narragansett Bay Fixed-Site Monitoring Network (NBFSMN) is to provide data to analyze the spatial and temporal distribution of hypoxia in Narragansett Bay. The data from this network are used in combination with other sources of data to assess the extent of seasonal hypoxia in Narragansett Bay and to guide more informed decision making with regards to emergency response and nutrient management. The interagency collaboration to design and implement the network has improved water quality monitoring efforts throughout the bay & provides accurate continuous data throughout the spawning season (May-Oct).

Quality Assurance and Quality Control (QA/QC) Procedures: After each sampling season, calculations and determinations for precision, completeness, and accuracy are made and corrective action implemented if needed. The data quality indicators are outlined in the QAPP for this program. If there are data that do not meet the measurement performance criteria, the data may be discarded, corrected or the data may be used with stipulations written about its accuracy in the metadata. Any limitations with the data will be documented in the metadata and the final data formats (raw files, edited, & corrected).

  • Raw Files- these files are exact files that were collected by the instruments during a deployment. They have not been altered. These files are in a comma-delimited format.
  • Edited Files- these files have been QA/QC using the network's data validation criteria. These files have blanks in deleted data cells. Each file contains all data points for the year for each site, including surface and bottom data in one file (ex: B2.gso.QP2009.edited.xls). These files contain graphics.
  • Corrected Files- these files have been QA/QC'd using the network's data validation criteria. The edited files are taken and missing points are calculated or corrected only when applicable to minimize data gaps. Each file contains all data points for the year for each site, including surface and bottom data in one file (ex: B2.gso.QP2009.corrected.xls). These files contain graphics.
  • Metadata Documents- these Word document files give a general overview of the program and the agencies involved and characteristics of each site. Each station (surface & bottom of each site) has its own metadata document. This document outlines the validation procedures conducted on the data. This document should be read thoroughly by data users.

As of 2017, the network currently deploys and maintains 15 water quality stations throughout Narragansett Bay using similar methodologies.

Data Links:

In varying forms, data generated from the fixed-site network are also publicly available via links and the table of stations throughout the year.

Real-time data links: data that is updated throughout the day in a raw format. Each agency maintains its own real-time data access since the data is considered raw, the general use for this data is data visualization. Using raw data for data analysis is not recommended.

Daily averaged data links: data updated monthly expressing the raw data of most stations in a downloadable daily averaged excel format including graphs

Data query links: The data is limited to the NBNERR operated sites (Potter's Cove & T-Wharf) and raw data available upon request from Daisy Durant (daisy@nbnerr.org) at NBNERR.

Monthly graphs links: RIDEM offers seasonal monthly graphs of the critical stations (Bullock Reach, Conimicut Pt., North Prudence, & Greenwich Bay marina) in a PDF format.

Yearly data downloads: RIDEM offers complete data sets (all station data in all three formats including metadata) for download through the following links by year. These are large files, and downloads may take several minutes depending on connection speed. To initiate the download, right-click on the link and Save Target As to an appropriate location. If you are unable to download these files, please contact Heather Stoffel at stoffel@uri.edu.

Acknowledgements:
The fixed-site monitoring network was established and has been maintained largely with federal funds from NOAA and EPA. Grants from the NOAA Bay Window Program have supported the recent expansion of the network. NOAA also provides funding to support the fixed-sites maintained by the NBNERR. EPA Clean Water Act grants (106 and 319) have continued to be used by DEM to support aspects of network operations. Other sources of funding may be noted in the metadata. In 2006, the RI General Assembly appropriated state funding to support monitoring and the Narragansett Bays, Rivers and Watersheds Coordination Team authorized a portion of the funds to be spent on the NBFSMN.
As of 2016, persons involved with the NBFSMN include:
