Criminal Investigation Unit 235 Promenade Street Providence, RI 02908-5767 (401) 222-2985 Fax 222-6823 DLE enforces the laws of the State of Rhode Island relating to hazardous waste, solid waste violations, and water pollution. In addition, the Division investigates cases involving fraudulent boat registrations and has achieved regional and national recognition for the numerous investigations that have been successfully prosecuted in state and federal court. As part of the investigations undertaken by the Division, investigators conduct interviews, surveillance, and other activities for the purpose of charging alleged violators/polluters. Investigators prepare cases for grand jury and court prosecution. The Division conducts joint criminal investigations in conjunction with the Environmental Protection Agency's Office of Criminal Investigation, RI State Police, State Attorney General's Office, and the U.S. Attorney's Office in Providence. The Division is also responsible for conducting background investigations of individuals and entities applying for permits to operate solid and hazardous waste facilities and of applicants applying for permits to transport hazardous waste in Rhode Island.
