The 1,000 square foot rain garden will redirect and filter runoff from a parking lot located just above the park land and local waterways including Park’s Pond, Pawcatuck River and Little Narragansett Bay. It consists of native plants, stones, gravel and mulch which will capture and filter the runoff water. This rain garden is part of a Save the Bay educational pilot project that demonstrates sustainable landscaping and stormwater management. With the help of local landscape architect David Renzi of Out in Front Horticulture, Wilcox Park Manager Alan Peck, OSEEC AmeriCorps members and Chariho High School, the project was a success and the community is aware of the benefits of rain gardens.
