The TownPlace Suites by Marriott in Quonset Business Park was developed as a key component of the Gateway District Master Plan. The new, environmentally friendly hotel is targeting a LEED Silver rating from the U.S. Green Building Council. Upon certification, the hotel will be one of the first LEED certified TownPlace Suites in the country, and the first LEED certified hotel in Rhode Island. As part of the project’s LEED certification efforts, a rain garden has been implemented to capture and treat stormwater runoff the hotel’s parking area. The system, consisting of two bioretention areas, is designed to treat the first inch of rainfall, a total water quality volume of 3,340 cubic feet. Runoff from the parking lot (contributing impervious area of 40,000 square feet) is channeled into the garden via a series of curb cuts. A number of signs have been installed along the rain garden’s perimeter in order to educate visitors of its purpose.
