The barrel is situated slightly uphill of the garden plots, so that gravity will provide enough pressure to use the water through a hose. The project was made possible by a grant from the United States Department of Agriculture. A similar system is currently being planned for SCLT’s Mystic Miner (112 Miner Street) community garden as well. Additionally, a 55 gallon rain barrel has been installed at SCLT’s Somerset community garden (85 Somerset Street) by students from the former Feinstein High School in Providence. Students installed a gutter system on the garden’s shed, recycled an industrial barrel by converting it into a rain barrel, and constructed an elevated wooded stand in order to increase water pressure for the Somerset community gardeners.
