William Kite Architects worked with Crossroads Rhode Island to design Kingstown Crossings, an affordable housing development in North Kingstown with many features across the spectrum of sustainability, including a native, drought resistant landscape that naturally filters stormwater. The development is organized along a central pedestrian pathway in order to minimize the use of cars and their associated pollutants that end up on our roadways, and ultimately our receiving waters. Situated on the site of former Navy housing, Kingstown Crossings occupies the same amount of land as the buildings it replaced.
L+A Landscape Architecture developed a site plan with grading that will filter the majority of the site’s stormwater through natural rain gardens, thus eliminating the flow of pollutants into nearby Narragansett Bay as well as the overloading of storm sewers. L+A’s plan also called for the preservation of many existing mature trees and additional native landscape plantings that are drought resistant so that no irrigation system is needed.
The project is seeking Gold certification through the LEED for Homes rating system as developed by the U.S. Green Building Council. As a result, special focus has been given to awareness and education through the institution of an on-site operations manager who will ensure proper maintenance, as well as an orientation and procedural overview of the green technologies given to tenants prior to move in.
