Home & Hospice Care of Rhode Island is the state’s largest and most comprehensive provider of hospice and palliative care, and the third oldest hospice in the country. Vision 3 Architects transformed the 50,000 square foot, four-story Philip Hulitar Inpatient Center to house HHCRI’s administrative offices, a 24-bed inpatient hospice, community and education meeting rooms, and to provide space for clinical staff. Through a commitment to environmental sustainability, innovative and creative planning, and thoughtful design, the Philip Hulitar Inpatient Center is the first fully operational healthcare facility in Rhode Island to be LEED certified, and only the second building in Rhode Island to achieve Gold level certification. An underground water storage system, which collects and treats 90% of rainfall in a cistern before returning it to the groundwater aquifer below, has been implemented in the facility, as well as low-flow plumbing fixtures with motion sensors and landscaping with native plants that do not require irrigation.
