Salvage Permit for Vehicle-Killed Wildlife

Rhode Island allows for the salvage of certain wildlife killed as a result of a collision with a motor vehicle. This permit is required within 24-hours of collection and possession of wildlife struck by a vehicle. Reports may be completed using this form or by leaving a voice message with the required information at 401-789-0281. Reporting roadkill mortalities provides DEM Division of Fish & Wildlife (DFW) information on wildlife populations and informs efforts to prevent wildlife losses and make highways safer.

  • Read the full Rules and Regulations for 250-RICR-60-00-14
  • Before you claim any roadkill salvage, consider the safety of yourself and fellow travelers. Always abide by traffic and safety laws.
  • The animal may be field dressed before it leaves the area but anyone who receives a permit and salvages wildlife is required to remove the entire animal from where it is found. Parts or viscera cannot be left at the site. To do so is a violation of state law and risks attracting other wildlife who may also be struck by a vehicle.
  • This permit is to possess one animal killed only by vehicular collision. Each individual animal requires its own unique permit.
  • Road-killed animals may not be tagged and possessed with carcass tags issued for the purpose of hunting.
  • A person may not kill an injured or wounded animal that they encounter for the purpose of salvage. A law enforcement officer may, however, when on the scene of a collision, euthanize an animal injured in the collision and that animal may be taken for salvage.
