Project Summary:

The Curran Brook artificial stormwater wetland in Cumberland, Rhode Island was constructed to treat stormwater runoff entering Robin Hollow Pond, a major water supply reservoir for Pawtucket, Central Falls, and the southern portion of Cumberland. Polluted stormwater from the highly urban Curran Brook watershed is was considered responsible for adversely affecting the quality of the Pond.

Project Narrative:

The Curran Brook artificial stormwater wetland in Cumberland, Rhode Island was constructed to treat stormwater runoff entering Robin Hollow Pond, a major water supply reservoir for Pawtucket, Central Falls, and the southern portion of Cumberland. Polluted stormwater from the highly urban Curran Brook watershed is was considered responsible for adversely affecting the  quality of the Pond.

 The two components of the Curran Brook artificial wetland that are primarily responsible for pollutant removal are the sediment forebay and the constructed wetland.  The sediment forebay traps sediments by allowing the settlement of particulate pollutants prior to entering the constructed wetland. The constructed wetland temporarily stores runoff in shallow pools that support conditions for the growth of wetland plants, and its sinuous flow path increases contact time.  This design maximizes the removal of pollutants, particularly nutrients and total suspended solids, via microbial breakdown, plant uptake, retention, and adsorption.
