National Archery in Schools Program (NASP)

The Rhode Island Division of Fish and Wildlife is committed to fostering a lifelong appreciation for the outdoors. NASP is an excellent way to engage youth in a fun and rewarding sport. Our mission is to instill key life skills such as patience, focus, and goal setting while introducing young archers to the importance of conservation and respect for wildlife.

About NASP

NASP is a nationwide initiative that promotes international-style target archery as an in-school program for grades 4-12. It’s typically taught as part of Physical Education but can also be integrated into subjects like history, language, and art.

NASP operates in over 48 states and has been successful due to its comprehensive, standardized approach. The program was developed by experts in education, conservation, and target archery to meet both state and national educational standards. Each participating teacher is certified to ensure the safe and effective instruction of archery. The curriculum is designed to be easy to teach and adaptable for most learners, making it an ideal fit for any school setting. With a simple setup, gymnasiums can quickly transform into target ranges with the addition of an arrow backstop curtain.

Why NASP Matters

NASP provides students with the opportunity to develop critical life skills such as focus, discipline, self-control, and patience. Through structured lessons, students learn not only how to safely shoot a bow but also gain valuable experiences that extend beyond the classroom. Archery offers an inclusive environment for all students, especially those who may not be involved in traditional sports. The program also opens doors to competitive opportunities, including scholastic tournaments and even post-secondary scholarships.

Get Involved

Rhode Island DEM is excited to offer training for teachers and administrators interested in bringing NASP to their schools. NASP-approved archery equipment may also be available through a lending program for schools that may not have the resources to purchase their own. For more information about how to get your school involved or to learn more about upcoming events and tournaments, please contact DEM.DFWHunterEducation@dem.ri.gov

Join the National Archery in the Schools Program and give students the chance to develop valuable skills, foster personal growth, and experience the excitement of archery!

The Rhode Island NASP program is supported by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service’s Wildlife and Sport Fish Restoration Program (WSFR).
