
Rhode Island Adult “Deer Camp” Whitetail Deer Hunter Training & Mentored Hunt
The RI DEM Division of Fish and Wildlife, in collaboration with Backcountry Hunters & Anglers and other partners, is offering a unique hands-on training and mentored hunting experience for adult-onset hunters. This program is designed to help participants gain the knowledge and skills needed to successfully hunt and process whitetail deer in Rhode Island.
Participants will receive instruction from experienced deer hunters and take part in a multi-day training series. The program will culminate in a mentored “Deer Camp” hunt on Prudence Island in January 2026.

Eligibility Requirements
To be considered, applicants must:
- Be a Rhode Island resident
- Be 21 years of age or older
- Have 3+ years of hunting experience without harvesting a deer
- Have Bowhunter education certification, or complete prior to 12/1/2025
- Be willing and able to commit to all training days and an overnight Deer Camp weekend.
- Be comfortable with heights (tree stand use)
- Be comfortable staying in communal lodging
Training & Deer Camp Dates
- Training 1: October 16, 2025 — 5:30 PM to 8:30 PM
- Training 2: November 8, 2025 — 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM (Rain Date: Nov 9)
- Training 3: November 22, 2025 — 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM (Rain Date: Nov 23)
- Deer Camp Weekend: January 16–18, 2026 on Prudence Island
