Lost Fishing Gear (Ghost Gear) Removal Plan for Narragansett Bay

Date:

Location: Maury Loontjens Memorial Library, 35 Kingstown Road, Narragansett, RI 02882

In partnership with commercial fishermen and other stakeholders, the Commercial Fisheries Research Foundation is starting a ghost gear removal program in Narragansett Bay in January 2023.

Discarded, lost, or abandoned fishing gear (ghost gear) left in the marine environment can have ecological, safety, and economic consequences to the area. Rhode Island has an active commercial and recreational fishery. Fishermen report thousands of abandoned traps and piles of ghost gear near Rhode Island fishing ports and coastal waters.

Please join us to learn about the removal and recycle plan, and have your questions answered about the project activities in the Bay and the ports next year.

A virtual option will be available, please email Susan Inglis at singlis@cfrfoundation.org to receive a link. To learn more about the CFRF Ghost Gear Removal Program, please visit the project webpage at http://www.cfrfoundation.org/removing-ghost-gear-from-rhode-island-waters
