The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (DEM) serves as the chief steward of the state’s natural resources – from beautiful Narragansett Bay to our local waters and green spaces to the air we breathe. Our mission put simply is to protect, restore, and promote our environment to ensure Rhode Island remains a wonderful place to live, visit, and raise a family.
Goodbye, eyesore!
DEM has completed work that began earlier this year to remove the sunken crane-topped barge from the Providence River. Thanks to a $1.5M grant from the NOAA Marine Debris Program, we were able to remove the barge which has sat on the seabed since 2017. Interested in the whole story? Listen to DEM Director Terry Gray discuss the project on The Blab Lab, an ecoRI News podcast hosted by Colleen Cronin
